General FAQs

Our average projects cost anywhere from $30,000-$80,000.

We regularly do perform work in the $5,000-$10,000 range, as well as $150,000+ and above for larger projects or yards with a swimming pool.

Yes, if the budget and scope make sense. We have done work as much as 4.5 hours out of the city in both smaller towns and lake communities.

If a project is far enough out of the city that commuting is not feasible we do charge for travel, accommodatoins and food allowances.

Absolutely! We love building neighbouring yards as we can make sure the designs are complimentary and which can raise the values of both properties.

Having a gorgeous yard and an unsightly neighbouring yard is very unfortunate, so we're thankful for opportunities to do side by side projects. You can also have savings because mobilization costs can be split between the two.

Swimming Pools

A typical pool can cost anywhere from $100,000 to $160,000 depending on size, features, and accessory packages. Pricing includes a fiberglass shell, plumbing to/from a pool house, winter safety cover and pool equipment (pump, cartridge filter, salt cell, and a natural gas heater). These prices do not include electrical and mechanical connections, the pool house or landscaping the yard as these are all dependent on distances and finishes.

We only install fiberglass pools as they are the best option for our climate and have the longest-lasting value. With very low maintenance costs, your investment every year to keep your pool running is minimal.

Installing a pool is a significant investment into your home and property in the first place and so repair and maintenance costs for other pool types can add up quickly. We install Latham fiberglass pools because they have a lifetime warranty (the longest in the industry.) We want to make sure you know your investment is well made.

Yes, as with any pool, a fiberglass pool can fail if installed incorrectly. The reason they fail is due to hydrostatic pressure caused by excessive ground water.

We have been trained in and follow manufacturer best installation practices. We also take additional measures to ensure your pool will not fail.

For example, we install an 8" dewatering pipe within the pool excavation which allows us to manage excessive ground water and maintain the proper volume of water in the pool at all times to protect against heaving, bowing and collapsing.

Patios

Square foot pricing is extremely inaccurate and unfair-- either to us or to you, the customer-- as there are a lot of factors that affect pricing.

Clay subsoils need a more intensive base preparation than sandy soils. Back yard patios are harder to access than front yard patios, so the labour time increases. Paving stones can range from $5-$17/sq.ft. for the bricks themselves.

All of this means that unit pricing is too variable from yard to yard. Instead, we use data collected over the past 12 years to influence how we quote our labour and materials needed. This provides a homeowner with our most accurate price rather than a guesstimate.

If you are planning to put a hot tub on your patio we will typically increase your base material depth beneath the hot tub from 6” to 10” to accommodate the additional load. This helps to know ahead of time so we can plan effectively for the additional excavation and base install.

With the use of polymer enhanced jointing sand, weed growth and ant colonization can be prevented. With an open graded base system these problems are also avoidable by removing any fine material that would encourage these problems.

If natural sand is used you could have weeds or ants come through your joints. We recommend natural sand is used in yards with extremely high ground water that have been known to heave dramatically (unless an extensive water management plan is in place).

Driveways

Typical cast-in-place (CIP) concrete standards are 4" of compacted base gravel and 4" of rebar reinforced concrete. CIP is one consistent surface that doesn't distribute point loads well, so it is prone to cracking in our climate due to its inflexibility during freeze-thaw cycles. Take a walk around any neighbourhood in our city and you are hard-pressed to find a driveway more than one-year-old without any cracks.

Our standards for paving stone driveways are a geosynthetic membrane, 12"-24" of a compacted aggregate base (depth and materials dependent on subsoil types and site conditions), and a 2.375-4" paving stone. Paving stone driveways distribute loads in smaller areas through the paver, the jointing sand, and then through each layer in the base. Paving stone driveways built this way hold up very well to freeze-thaw cycles as they are a flexible system.

Additional materials and labour are needed to ensure a paving stone driveway can adequately handle and disperse the load of a vehicle in our climate without failure. Therefore the cost is higher.

A paving stone driveway is a longer lasting and repairable option that adds value to the property as opposed to CIP.

No, the material selected should be governed by a maximum aspect ratio (length to thickness) of 4:1, and a minimum thickness of 2.375’’ (60mm). Pavers and slabs that range from 3.375”-4” thick are also good options for driveways.

For example, a paver that measures 8”x4”x2.375” (aspect ratio of 3.36) is a good option for a driveway. A slab that measures 24”x24”x2.56” (aspect ratio of 9.38) is a poor choice and may be prone to cracking.

Yes, we repair driveways. If we are lifting the pavers, re-establishing proper grade and reinstalling them without excavating and providing a new base installation, we can not warranty the work.

Landscape Design

The cost of a landscape design is dependent on the complexity. Once we understand the scope of work we will be able to provide a price for your design.

Depending on complexity, 2D or 3D renderings, scale drawings and a layout of the services and lines that we have installed in your yard, along with annotated drawings of important features.

Yes. The only project not requiring a design is the replacement of an existing feature with an identical footprint. Our minimum fee for a consultation is $100.

Retaining walls & stairs

Properly built retaining walls can exceed over 80’ in height, much more than a typical residential yard would ever need. Anything above 48” needs an engineer to sign off and stamp the design.

Our design team can come up with beautiful designs using terraced walls to prevent additional engineering costs.

We use a clean ¾” crushed rock base for brick steps. This rock has a high compaction rating before mechanical compaction. Once we run a plate compactor on it, it becomes an excellent base that won’t settle or slump in the future (as long as the subbase has also been compacted.)

Walls typically fall over due to the settling of the backfill and the weight exerted by the earth and water behind it. By installing weeping tile for drainage and geosynthetics at the appropriate intervals behind the retaining wall, we make sure that your wall is tied back into the soil and disperses those forces rather than absorbing them directly into the structure of the brick retaining wall.

Landscape lighting

You can find pricing for individual lights in our shop (available soon) or receive pricing on the supply and install of a lighting package by giving us a call.

Spaces you spend significant time are the top priority; patios and decks are the first that we recommend. Travel routes are important to light up as well to prevent tripping hazards and guide your eyes to your destination. After that, we highlight eye-catching features and points of interest; house numbers, beautiful blooming trees or shrubs and architectural features.

If your lighting budget is significant, you can light up an entire yard as landscape lighting is subtle enough that your yard won’t look like daytime and the ability to enjoy any part of it in the evening is a privilege.

There is no correct number depending on what you want to light up. Sometimes 2 lights are enough and sometimes 10 are necessary to create a sense of consistency across a larger area.

If you need help planning your lighting please contact us for a landscape design.

Patio covers & enclosures

Depending on the goal you wish to achieve you can have a traditional shingled roof or a more modern solution. Glass, acrylic and motorized aluminum options exist. Call today and chat with someone from our design team for more information.

Prices can range from approximately $5,000 for a shingled roof pergola to $60,000 for a motorized pergola of the same size, with speakers, lights and retractable screens.

3-season rooms start at approximately $20,000. This number is very dependent on size, materials and finishes.

Outdoor Living

Outdoor living is the extension of an indoor lifestyle to the outdoors. If you would relax to music, cook meals or play board games indoors we want you to have the same opportunity outdoors. This means designing spaces, supplying the products and materials and professionally installing them to achieve your lifestyle.

Every aspect of our business is geared towards outdoor living, but some of these additional items listed above are things people don't think about for the outdoor environment.

Due to COVID outdoor furniture is in high demand and physical inventory is minimal. We have a digital kiosk where you can select furniture from several manufacturers and see the availability in real-time. You can come to visit us at the office and look through the selection of what is available or we can bring an iPad to you when we come for a site visit for the rest of your landscape.

We can build and install custom or pre-fabricated firepits and fireplaces that burn wood, propane or natural gas. Custom appliances offer a wider range of functions and aesthetics (think walls of fire or unique shapes) but also cost more than a pre-fabricated kit.

All of our fire-rated appliances will follow municipal codes and abide by any rules, regulations or bylaws associated with placement and safe operation.

As of right now we only offer wood-burning pizza ovens but are looking into propane and natural gas options.

Artificial turf

Similar to patios and the variables associated with it strict unit pricing usually isn’t an accurate way of pricing artificial turf installation. When budgeting for artificial turf the subtotal can range anywhere from $10-$18/square foot.

Years ago it certainly did! Artificial turf technology has come a long way and the way the rolls are designed, manufactured and installed leaves your finished turf looking much more like natural grass yet with the added benefit of no maintenance.

After years of trials with different materials, we have established a suggested line of products that you are welcome to come to see and touch at our shop.

In theory none, but we all know life happens. If there are spills or stains you can simply rinse the turf off with water or use a mild household detergent if needed. If the turf is matted from the prolonged weight on one area, you can use a broom or plastic-tipped rake to stand the fibres back upright. If you have leaves that fall on the turf you may want a leaf blower to remove the leaves before they dry up and get ground into the turf. This won’t damage the turf but after time you may notice the leaf build up.

Decks, fences & pergolas

Similar to patios, unit pricing is not very accurate for decking and fencing. Variables affecting deck pricing are:

  • Material (is it pressure-treated, composite or trowel-on decking?)
  • Design (are there straight boards, curved boards, multiple colours, borders?)
  • Elevation (is it ground-level, raised or multi-tier?)
  • Size (can we use full-size boards or will we have excess waste by needing part of a second board?)
  • Access (can materials easily be brought to site or do we need additional logistics?).
  • Fences are the same way between pressure-treated, vinyl or composite materials and designs.

We follow all of the City of Saskatoon (CoS) decking requirements as laid out in the building specifications and often go above the minimum requirements to ensure your deck will last for years. When it comes to unspecified information, such as installing decking, we follow the manufacturer’s best practices for the material we are installing.

A pergola is a decorative free-standing structure with posts, beams and joists. It can include accent pieces, privacy screens and lighting. A pergola with a fixed roof can also be called a pavilion.

Pergolas help create a sense of space as they form an outdoor ‘room’ for you to be in. They can also provide shade depending on the design of the structure.

    Concrete

Square foot pricing is extremely inaccurate and unfair-- either to us or to you, the customer-- as there are a lot of factors that affect pricing.

We price every project based on a site visit, set of drawings, or enough information and pictures from you the customer to understand the scope of work and set of circumstances accompanying it.

Unfortunately our climate has some of the harshest freeze-thaw cycles in the world so we can not guarantee that there will not be cracks at some point. We do everything we can within reason to prevent the possibility of cracking or failing concrete. Our base prep, concrete mixture optimization, and techniques are always in the forefront of our minds when designing and installing your concrete to maximize the chance of success.

Some concrete can be slippery when stamped and sealed. We can finish your surface with a slight textured surface to help prevent slippery conditions in winter.

    Irrigation & landscaping

We use Rainbird and Hunter irrigation parts, depending on the system needs. Both well-established brands provide excellent products.

We install in-ground manifolds unless a customer specifically asks for otherwise.

We supply & install a wide range of materials from topsoil to many different groundcover and accent rocks and mulches.

We do not exclusively supply material.

As your mulch breaks down and decomposes it provides nutrients for your soil. We install a 3”-4” layer of mulch and recommend that it is topped up to maintain a 2”-3” layer. This is typically every few years but sometimes longer depending on the type of mulch used.

    Snow removal

We have pricing options that range from hourly rates, cost per snowfall or fixed monthly fees.

We provide service to commercial, multi-unit residential, and institutional/civic properties.

Yes, we currently clear sidewalks at condominium complexes, apartments and businesses with stretches of sidewalks in front of their building entrances.

We do not clear residential sidewalks.

    Landscape Maintenance

Yes, commercial and multi-unit residential properties make up the bulk of our maintenance activity.

We can custom-tailor maintenance packages for all kinds of properties, but our greatest value to residential customers is planning and maintaining.

No, all tree removals/pruning are supervised by an ISA-certified Arborist and any necessary pesticide application is performed by a Certified Landscape Applicator.
