Retaining walls & stairs

There’s nothing like having wasted space. Not only is it irritating to look at but it means you have spent your money on something that you can’t use.

A segmental or brick retaining wall can be constructed quickly so that you’re able to regain that space in a short time. With a variety of colours, sizes and textures available your retaining wall, stairs or steps can match the aesthetic of your house or existing yard so it isn’t an eye-sore. More often than not, these features become a beautiful focal point of the yard.

If you’ve got a sloping yard and want more usable space or need to manage a steep grade change, give us a call about installing a retaining wall or brick stairs.

FAQs

Properly built retaining walls can exceed over 80’ in height, much more than a typical residential yard would ever need. Anything above 48” needs an engineer to sign off and stamp the design.

Our design team can come up with beautiful designs using terraced walls to prevent additional engineering costs.

We use a clean ¾” crushed rock base for brick steps. This rock has a high compaction rating before mechanical compaction. Once we run a plate compactor on it, it becomes an excellent base that won’t settle or slump in the future (as long as the subbase has also been compacted.)

Walls typically fall over due to the settling of the backfill and the weight exerted by the earth and water behind it. By installing weeping tile for drainage and geosynthetics at the appropriate intervals behind the retaining wall, we make sure that your wall is tied back into the soil and disperses those forces rather than absorbing them directly into the structure of the brick retaining wall.
